SCIENCE: This is a little summary of the theme #2, Plants

THEME 2, PLANTS

PLANT GROUPS
Roots: are in the soil. Water and other substances are absorbed form the soil
Stem: supports the leaves
Leaves: breathe and make the plant’s food

FLOWERING PLANTS
Gymnosperms: have small flowers, but not fruit (example: pine tree)
Angiosperms: have flowers and fruit (examples: grapes, olives, lemon tree, orange tree, etc.)

NON-FLOWERING PLANTS
Mosses: are small plants which live in rocks. They need shade and moisture
Ferns: are larger than mosses. They have thick, underground stems and big leaves

PLANT NUTRITION
Respiration: plants breathe. They take oxygen (O2) from the air, and release carbon dioxide (CO2).
Plant nutrition: plants are autotrophs; they make their own food with sunlight, CO2, H2O and minerals from the soil.

Water and minerals: plants absorb water and mineral from the soil through the root. These nutrients are called raw sap.

Photosynthesis: takes place in the leaves. Raw sap mixed with CO2, becomes elaborated sap. This is the plant’s food. Photosynthesis takes place only during the day.

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

Sexual reproduction: flowers are the reproductive organs of the plant.
·         The stamens: are the male parts which produce pollen
·         The ovary: Is the female part which contains ovules (seeds)

Pollination: is the movement of pollen from the stamens to the ovary
Seeds and fruit: when the ovary grows, becomes a fruit with seeds inside.

ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Asexual reproduction:  some plants reproduce without flowers or seeds

Tubers: are underground stems (potatoes)
Bulbs: grow underground (onion)
Stolons: stems which extend across the ground. The stem grows roots and creates a new plant (strawberry).

SCIENCE TEST: the test on theme #2 is the next Thursday 24 October, 2013
(la fecha de examen del tema 2 de ciencias es el próximo jueves 24 de octubre de 2013 )

here you have a home-made summary of the theme (it will help you to pass the test, good luck!)
